Syawlalliwi(Shawi) Ronquillo, Grade 10, Eaton School
I moved to Eatonia, Saskatchewan from the Philippines when I was just five years old and I have lived here ever since. I live with my parents and my younger sister who is five. On February 1, 2021, my mom gave birth to another baby girl. My sister and I are currently waiting for them to come home so we can meet our new sister.
I love to play and listen to music, read Manga, watch Anime, watch K-dramas, sleep, draw and hang out with friends. At school, I am a part of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), Yearbook Committee, Volleyball team, Basketball team and the Badminton team. My favourite colours are red and blue. My favourite subjects are math and science. After I graduate, I plan on pursuing a medical career
I have been a part of the Student Leadership Council (SLC) for three years now. I decided to involve myself in student leadership because coming from a small town, I’ve seen the lack of leadership in our school. I simply wished I could help our community grow by learning more about leadership
When I was in the Philippines, I was speaking our native language, Bisaya, as well as starting to learn our national language, Tagalog. However, when my family planned on immigrating to Canada, they decided to get me a tutor that would help me learn some English. When I was finally living in Canada, I became more and more fluent in English, but I lost the ability to speak my native language. I also lost all memory of our national language. However, since my parents still spoke to me in our native language, I could still understand it. Over time, I hung around more Filipinos who spoke our national language and it started coming naturally to me as if I’ve been speaking it all my life despite barely being formally taught about it. I’ve gained lots of interests in many different languages and I’ve tried learning some on my own. One of which is Korean. I have learned to pronounce and read Korean symbols.
