The Digital Storytelling Training and Competition is part of the Sun West Creator Olympics. The Creator Olympics is a series of training workshops and competitions to provide students the opportunity to learn and practice skills that can be used in many areas of the creative arts, and then test these skills in competitions with other students. 9:00 am – 3:00pm, Wednesday, March 19, 2025
Rose Room, Rosetown Civic Centre, 1005 Main Street, Rosetown
Any Grades 9-12 student in Sun West School Division schools can apply to attend. Twenty will be selected based on the quality of their applications, which will include a teacher reference. Students who are creative and enjoy storytelling whether that be through writing, art, video, pictures or other medium, are encouraged to apply.
There is no cost to attend, and lunch will be provided.
Sun West has in place arrangements to transport students with authorized Sun West drivers from the following locations: Loreburn, Beechy, Outlook, Kyle, Eston, Biggar and Kindersley. To participate, students must have a commitment from parents/caregivers to either get the students to one of these locations, where they can be picked up and later dropped off, or alternately to a location along the route of one of these drivers to Rosetown, where they can be picked up and dropped off.
Students will receive training on storytelling techniques and skills on how to use current video creation platforms, applications and cameras to tell compelling stories. Students will be divided into groups of five and each group will compete with the other groups to create a short video story based on assigned criteria.
Students will use either a smart phone or tablet during training and for the competition. Devices will need to have the free application CapCut on their device. If a student does not have a device, or does not wish to use a personal device, Sun West will provide an iPad for use that day.
The completed videos will be evaluated by the instructor who will recognize the skills demonstrated through certificates and prizes. The videos will be posted on the Sun West website and social media where the students will also be recognized for the skills they excelled in. Announcements will also be made during the training about future competition opportunities.
Students will be trained by Layla Bautista, an instructor with the Recording Arts Institute of Saskatoon (RAIS).
Ms. Bautista teaches in the Motion Picture Arts Diploma Program that is designed to prepare students to work in the film and video industry by developing their creative skills to use the power of film to tell stories.
Ms. Bautista is also the owner of Bokeh Media, a Saskatoon-based company with national and international clients that specializes in documenting music events, promotional content, and short film production.
