Eleven Grades 9-12 students from seven Sun West schools participated in the first-ever Creator Olympics in Rosetown on March 19, 2025.

The Creator Olympics are training and competition events to provide students with the opportunity to learn about different types of creative activities and work with other students to develop products or activities using what they learn. The focus of the March 19 event was Digital Storytelling.  The students received training from Layla Bautista, an Instructor in the Motion Picture Arts Diploma Program at the Recording Arts Institute of Saskatoon (RAIS). RAIS co-sponsored the event with Sun West and Ms. Bautista introduced the students to the fundamental principles of storytelling using digital media. This included creative ways to use camera angles, lighting and video editing.

After completing the training part of the program, the students were divided into three teams each that produced a short video. This included scripting, recording, and editing, with students taking different responsibilities in the production. Producing these videos provided the students the chance to practice the skills they had learned from Ms. Bautista.

Following the completion of the videos, the students were provided feedback from Ms. Bautista and were awarded certificates for having successfully completing the training.

Sun West hopes to hold more Creator Olympics events in the next school year.
