During Saskatchewan Library Week, October 13-19, there was a lot happening at Loreburn Central School.
Grades K-2 students brought their stuffed animals into the library for a sleepover. The stuffies got into all sorts of mischief, even finding their way to the administration office and using the photocopier! The Librarian, Mrs. Stamnes returned them to the classroom on Thursday, where the students enjoyed popcorn and looked at pictures of the stuffies’ adventures.
The Grades 3-5 class participated in a call number scavenger hunt in the library. Four teams worked together to find books, each containing a letter that formed a riddle when combined. The students did an excellent job and learned a lot from the activity.
Students in Grades 6-8, 9, and 10-12 learned about banned books. The younger students took part in a digital breakout room, with some managing to break out in record time. The seniors watched a video and aced a quiz on banned books, with a little help from the internet, which sparked some insightful discussions.
To test their knowledge, students were asked questions about banned books, such as which Dr. Seuss book was banned for being offensive to forestry workers (“The Lorax”), and which diary from World War II was banned for being too depressing (“The Diary of Anne Frank”). They also learned about Robert Munsch’s “Thomas’ Snowsuit” and the classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” both of which have faced bans.
Each day began with a video of a disguised staff member reading a poem. Classes guessed the identity of the “Masked Reader,” with correct guesses allowing them to advance to the next day. Since no class guessed correctly every day, the game extended into the following week. Ultimately, the grade 6-8 class was the last to guess correctly and won ice cream sundaes as a reward.
