On October 17, 85 students from 14 Sun West schools with a Grades 8-12 component attended the annual Sun West Student Leadership Seminar in Rosetown at the local Elk’s Hall.
The students participated in activities that helped them enhance their leadership skills such as public speaking and teamwork. They heard from veteran members of the Sun West Student Leadership Teams who described their experience in the program and the value they received as part of it. Nine Sun West students who had recently attended the Canadian Student Leadership Conference in Haliburton, Ontario, made a presentation about the conference and led the group in a motivational activity they learned at the conference.
In another activity students had the opportunity to express their views on issues such as the provincial cell phone policy, use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools, cultural and gender diversity in schools and what types of issues students should bring to the Board of Education in their annual Youth Consultation meeting with the Board.
The students were divided into ten teams and each team developed a plan and presentation for a student leadership conference. Each team took turns making their presentation to the whole gathering. The students showed great creativity and enthusiasm in their presentations and wowed the adult advisors at the meeting.
Students who attended the seminar now have the chance to apply to be a member of the Sun West Student Leadership Program in one of three team; Team Sun West that organizes the annual Sun West Student Leadership Conference, the Youth Consultation Team that gathers student voice for an annual meeting with the Board of Education, and the Comm(unications) Squad, who promotes the Student Leadership Program and student leadership throughout the division through videos, social media, podcasts, and other activities.
You will be hearing a lot more from many of these students very soon!
Below are three videos with a few highlights from the day

While waiting for their rides after the Seminar, a group of Eston and Kenaston students had some fun singing an old standard (with a small variation).
